Lumley does a commendable job of bringing readers up to speed, but his storyline summaries aren't a proper substitute for reading the series from the beginning. I highly recommend this book, but I would NOT make it the first book that you read in the Necroscope epic. The first book introduces readers to Harry Keogh 'the man who can talk to the dead, the man for whom every grave. I rank it close behind my favorite, Book 3: The Source. The Necroscope series started in 1980, going on to spawn 18 books total. It is one of the best books in the series. I haven't listened to the entire audio version yet, as it was just released yesterday, but I remember the print copy vividly. He creates unique, terrifying new Lords but each has a varying amount of humanity that helps them from becoming boring, robotic vampires.
